Snippets about roulette

Roulette is the third most popular game in the world, the first two being craps and slots. The game has a rich history, although the origin of the game is unknown. The wheel is said to have been invented by Louis and Francois Blanc, the two French brothers. However, since gambling was illegal in France in those days, they supposedly transported the wheel over the border to Germany. Very interestingly, if you add all the digits present on the Roulette wheel, the sum you get is 666, which is reputed as being the devil's number according to the New Testament. So, according to Roulette lore, Francois sold his soul to the devil in return for the Roulette wheel!

According to another story, the wheel was invented by Blaise Pascal, a renowned philosopher, physicist and mathematician from France during 17th century. Traces of Roulette's history are also found in ancient China, but because ancient Chinese secrets were fiercely guarded and China was secluded from the world because of the Great Wall, the game did not travel to other parts of the world. Although we do not know which of these stories is true, what we do definitely know is that Roulette is a game that has enthralled people in all parts of the world.

In French, Roulette means 'a small wheel'. There are two versions of the game – European roulette and American roulette. The only difference between the two games is the presence of an additional slot with '00' in American roulette. European roulette has just a '0' slot. However, this small change makes a huge difference for the game. American roulette has a house edge of around 5.26% and European roulette has a house edge of 2.7%. Owing to the flexibility and the amazing number of winning combinations that are possible in the game, it has been a favorite subject of study for mathematicians and statisticians.

Roulette does not adhere to some of the most popular gambling strategies adopted by gamblers. For instance, Martingale rule fails very badly when it comes to roulette. According to this strategy, a player has to double his stake with every loss and play until he wins. The logic is to reduce the average loss by making a big win. Also, since it is unlikely that a player losses every game he plays and chances are high that he wins at least one game between losses, Martingale strategy aims to cover up the loss by winning big. In Roulette, this somehow just does not work because of the many winning combinations.

There are a lot of roulette stories that go down in history as some of the most memorable. One of the most famous stories is about Ashley Revell, a gambler from England. A small time man, Revell sold every bit of possessions he had, collected all the money and took a trip to Vegas to play roulette. So gutsy was the man that he gambled his entire bank balance in just one single roulette bet. Stunningly, he won and his meager savings shot up to $135,000! He bet on red.
